Three Parts Tickled, One Part Terrified
There are a few things this sock is not.
- It is not the the sock for the Socktoberfest Mystery Sock KAL. It is my pattern Belvedere. I gave the original away to Miss Peaknit and thought it would be nice to finally have a pair of my own.
- It is not going to have a mate any time soon. It is going to have to wait. I'm too busy with the Mystery Sock KAL, among other things.
- It is not being modeled by one of my ever tolerant children. It is being modeled by a woman who wonders if photographing socks counts as "Activity Points" on Weight Watchers. When the "A" team models are in school, mom must sub in and contort her body into positions that make certain yoga poses look easy to get a foot photo.
So.
Here's the thing.
I'm stunned, flummoxed, awed, humbled, terrified, thrilled, tickled pink by the response to the Mystery Sock KAL. There have been some very nice bloggers spreading the word and we are now up to 500 (and counting) members in the Through The Loops group on Ravelry. I'm pretty sure most of those are there for the KAL since we had 82 on Tuesday morning before I posted about the sock. Eeek.
Since in those numbers I know there must be a range of knitting abilities and time constraints, I've decided that I should offer two versions of the sock. The first will be the basic pattern, appropriate for those who are comfortable with yo, k2tog, ssk. The second will have some cabling added in for a little extra challenge. I think it will be fun to watch both versions grow among our members.
Last night a very nice and very generous yarn store owner offered some prizes for our little KAL. Linda from Yarnzilla is donating three packages with two skeins of Jitterbug in each!! (You heard me right, JITTERBUG!) YUM. I'll be sending a few patterns her way to bundle with the yarn. Anyone who completes a pair of the KAL socks and posts them in the group by 11/29 (there will be a thread to show off your finished pairs), will be added to the drawing. You will find more details on the group page.
Off to work on a pattern or two. See you soon.

You know what this means? I now need to knit TWO PAIR OF SOCKS for the TTL Mystery.
Sit back, enjoy the ride and don't worry. Whether it's one person or 1000 they'll love the socks.

It is truly exciting, and I am so happy that you came up with this ingenius plan to get people excited about sock knitting. Like Margene said, everyone will love the socks! and yes, enjoy the ride too! Socktoberfest is a celebration :)

It only counts if you are modeling a pair of socks. Not just one. ;^)

that belvedere sock is beautiful! i'm looking forward to getting started on the mystery sock. i won't be able to cast on until after this weekend when i can go home to get some sock yarn.

I keep rifling around my yarn drawer for some sock yarn for this, to bring the count up to 579 (and counting). After all, I won't have to knit a whole pair -- just the one for now. And that won't be too hard in installments, right?! But NO. I don't have ANY sock yarn to use. (Or any yarn at all almost... huh.) I'd go buy myself some except that the only thing I'm allowed to buy right now is food.
Sigh.

Congratulations! That's so exciting -- and how great that there are prizes, too!

I have to admit, K, I have been feeling sort of "meh" about socks, for a good couple of months now. But a sock-a-long? From one of your patterns, color me intrigued. When will you post the cable-tastic version, you know, if one were interested in such things...
Posted by: nova | October 02, 2008 at 04:51 PM
Sweet!I was hoping it had cables.I am feeling very cable-y this fall.
If it took you at least 30 minutes and you sweated,I think it counts as activity.Or at least it should.

I can't wait for some sock instructions!! I mean, as if socks and mysteries weren't good enough on their own? Geez. Make my day, why don't you?

I so love my personal Belvideres:) I was able to wear them yesterday! I love the colorway you are using for yours - and photography does not count as Activity points? If it takes you 30 minutes and you are huffing and puffing...that's at least one! And the KAL is so exciting! And prizes - oh, I gotta get back to my cuff!

I've just found your blog and have joined in the KAL. I'm from South Jersey, I'm guessing that your from north from the scenery in your pictures...it's much flatter down here in the Pinelands! I'm off to pick yarn from my sock stash...thanks for the work you've put into the pattern!

I'm here thanks to Margene. Will put you in my feeds and enjoy getting to know you. I just ordered some of that tweedy sock yarn from Knitpicks. Sounds perfect for a KAL to me!
